Ford Explorer Fully Redesigned for 2020

Ford has completely redesigned the Explorer heading into the 2020 model year. From the SUV's looks to its very architecture, the entire package has been re-vamped. On the outside, the Explorer sports a whole-new look. Inside the cabin, it offers a range of new features and a renewed focus on comfort. Under the hood, it gets new powertrain options and a return to rear-wheel drive architecture. There's a lot to get a excited about, so let's get started!

Performance

Performance and Capability

Capability and performance see some substantial changes with the new 2020 Explorer. One of the most prominent changes comes with the SUV's drivetrain. For several years, the Explorer relied on a front-wheel drive design -- the new model returns to traditional rear-wheel drive. This move aims to improve handling, ride quality, towing, and off-road capability.

Not all new Explorer models are exclusively rear-wheel drive, though. Ford offers intelligent 4WD as an option with the 2020 Explorer. This feature can deliver power to all four wheels for extra grip. It works in conjuncture with the Terrain Management system as well.

Ford is offering three engine options to consider in the new Explorer.

  • The standard 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine is the same stout powerplant that you'll find in the Ford Ranger.
  • The all-new hybrid powertrain uses a 3.3-liter V6 and an electric motor to produce excellent power numbers.
  • The 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 uses twin turbocharging to produce 400 horsepower for the Explorer St.

Each new Explorer model is rated well for towing thanks to the shift to rear-wheel drive architecture. They all have a maximum towing capacity of at least 5,000 pounds, so you'll be ready to hook up your trailer and roll. You can get even better towing performance with the addition of the Trailer Tow Package -- Class III.

Design

Design and Features

One of the new Explorer's strong points is its versatile design.

  • Seating for up to six or seven passengers, depending on configuration.
  • E-Z Entry second-row makes loading and unloading passengers a breeze.
  • Substantial cargo space behind the second and third rows means you can bring supplies along. Space expands to 87 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.
  • Tri-zone climate control helps passengers throughout the cabin stay comfortable.

On top of this practical design, the 2020 Explorer offers a wealth of premium features and advanced technology options. Features like FordPass Connect, SYNC 3, and Ford+Alexa keep you connected while you're on the road.

Safety

Safety Equipment

More and more, modern cars are relying on technology advancements to make sure passengers stay safe. The new 2020 Explorer is no different. Ford offers the SUV with Ford Co-Pilot 360 -- a suite of technologies that helps you stay aware of your surroundings and react to potentially dangerous situations.

  • Blind Spot Information System indicates when another vehicle is in a low-visibility area.
  • A standard rear-view camera displays obstacles while you're in reverse.
  • Automatic Emergency Braking with Pre-Collision Assist monitors oncoming hazards and employs automatic braking when necessary before a collision.
  • Auto High-Beam headlamps can detect curves and dips in the road. The system will turn your high beams on and off accordingly.
  • Lane-Keeping System lets you know if you've drifted into another lane without signaling.
